Tenaciously clinging to the coast of the Nera river along which it extends for 70 square kilometers. The territory of Ferentillo (260 m a.s.l.) still preserves today fascinating atmospheres of the ancient medieval village that merges into one body with unspoiled nature.

The Nera Valley (Valnerina) which up to the vicinity of Ferentillo has predominantly the appearance of a gorge, here changes its shape and becomes a valley, with greater extension of flat surfaces. The last two peaks, which mark the point of this transition, as of the columns of Hercules, are the Monte (813 m) to the west and Monte S. Angelo (945 m) to the east, otherwise known as the Midday Rock.

The surrounding area is mainly occupied by woods, streams, plateaus, pastures and very high peaks such as Monte Aspra (1652 m), the Cima del Carpellone (1446 m), Monte Petano (1262 m) and Monte Solenne (1286 m). The housing units located on terraces, spurs, offshoots that interrupt the acclivity of the slopes and where natural springs of water rise, were well defended thanks above all to the natural defenses and to a complex system of communications through towers (fortresses) that wind throughout the territory.
