The Aeolian Islands form an archipelago consisting of seven real islands, to which are added islets and rocks emerging from the sea. The seven islands are located off northern Sicily, in front of the Tyrrhenian coast of Messina and are therefore visible from much of the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily when visibility is excellent and there is no haze.

Vulcano is the closest island to Sicily and to separate it from Lipari > it's a small channel just over a mile wide. Its name comes from the Roman god and is composed of the volcanoes Lentia, Piano, Vulcanello and Fossa, the most active of the four.
