Moneglia: Liguria's Hidden Gem

Liguria, Moneglia
Liguria, Moneglia

Moneglia in Liguria is a small village set in a large bay between two rugged pine-clad promontories.

It has a wide sandy beach, and several smaller rocky coves, some accessible only by sea (boat hire is available). The hills around the bay have many well-defined nature trails, and one of the capes is undeveloped without traffic, and perfect for family-friendly walks.

The town is notable for its historic buildings, including the 14th century church of San Giorgio which has an interior festooned with paintings and sculpture, and the smaller Santa Croce church which was built in 1725 but dates back to the 12th century. The area is known as a producer of high quality olive oil, and every year on Easter Monday an olive oil fair is held which attracts growers and pressers from far and wide.

The town is well served by restaurants offering the local Ligurian take on Mediterranean and Italian cuisine, and the narrow winding streets of the central old town offer charming cafes, bars, and handicraft shops.

Moneglia takes its name from the latin for gem, a title bestowed by the Romans, and it has been awarded both a blue flag for its beaches, and a place on the official list of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
