Sandwiched neatly between Naples and Cosenza lies Cilento - a jaw-droppingly picturesque area even by Italy's standards. This part of Campania is bursting with vibrant nature, and is home to the Parco Nazionale del Cilento, Vallo di Diano e Alburni - a colossal national park that was officially declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998.
The footprints of ancient Greece are very much apparent in this region of Campania, with the Paestum boasting some of the most significant historic buildings assembled during this period of history.
Elsewhere, tourists can venture into the nature reserve and become lost in a clouded haze of aromatic wild flower scents, or alternatively amble into the area where the famous CilentoDOP olive oil is grown and produced. The magnificent rolling hills hang above the Tyrhennian Sea, and offer a breathtaking sight for anyone visiting this region for the very first time. Offering a more naturalistic and authentic Italian experience than the overcrowded and commercialized major cities, this area of Campania is somewhere that any ardent traveller simply has to see.
