Lorica is a tourist village in the Sila Grande perfectly set in the valley that surrounds Lake Arvo and for its beauty it is unanimously considered “The Pearl of the Sila”. The territory of the tourist complex falls into three different municipalities in the province of Cosenza: San Giovanni in Fiore, Pedace and Serra Pedace. The town is located in the territory of the first two municipalities, while in the territory of the third falls only the ski lift and the related services. The hamlet is located at 1315 meters above sea level. The name comes from the Latin 'lùrica' (leather armor of the ancient Roman legionaries), and could be interpreted as a safe, insurmountable place, where to hide and protect oneself from any opponents or enemies, but since there are no certain data regarding the discovery of signs and artifacts that may indicate the presence of man since ancient origins, the term should refer to the natural aspect of the area, which like a vegetable stronghold, in recent centuries presented itself to man as a waterproof, cramped and wild habitat. Developed along the road axis of the SS 108 bis that from San Giovanni in Fiore leads to the junction of “Bocca di Piazza” and from here you reach the countries of the pre- sila cosentina, over the years a part of the town has developed at the charming lakeside promenade, the access road that leads the village at the foot of Lake Arvo. Lorica experienced a significant development around the 1960s when around the farmhouses that formed its original urban nucleus, began to rise. hundreds of villas of tourists in love with the natural beauty of the area and dozens of hotels that now make this village one of the most equipped and renowned in Sila. The lake has always been a point of interest for economic operators in the area, and on it, still, the hopes of tourism relaunch are placed on it. Nestled between the two highest peaks of the Silano plateau, namely Botte Donato on one side and Monte Perillo on the other, makes it even more amp; ugrave; charming and charming the place. With a length of 8.7 km and a total perimeter of 24 km, this lake is the second in size after Lake Cecita and is connected with Lake Ampollino through a tunnel pipeline. It was built in a swampy area, through the construction of a clay dam that is, still currently, the largest in Europe and measures 280 mt. of length and 22 mt. in height. The works lasted from 1927 to 1931 and was inaugurated in 1932 by Queen Maria José of Savoy. It has a capacity ranging from 70 to 80 million cubic meters. Thanks to these characteristics and this conformation, the lake lends itself well to rowing races, so much so that the completion of the Olympic Center of rowing. The lake is also navigable, and over the years it has hosted rowing and windsurfing competitions and lately, in the summer, it can be crossed with an electric boat powered by solar panels or renting pedal boats.
