Museo Nazionale della Magna Grecia

The National Museum of Magna Grecia is in possession of one of the most remarkable collection of artifacts from Magna Grecia. The collections include materials found from excavations in some regions of southern Italy such as Sicily, Calabria and Basilicata. There are numerous famous works that can be seen in the museum, such as the Riace Bronzes, the Head of the Philosopher and the collections of pinakes, terracotta votive pictures.

The Aragonese castle of Reggio Calabria is the main fortification of the city. The Small Museum of San Paolo preserves the collection of works collected over sixty years by Monsignor Francesco Gangemi. The Musical Instrument Museum is located in an exhibition space of more than two hundred square meters. Since 1996, it has been welcoming musical instruments that belong to the traditional folk and ethnic music culture coming from all over the world. The exhibition shows about eight hundred instruments that are catalogued according to the Hornbostel-Sachs system and that belong to different families.

The Paleomarino Museum was initially established as a cultural and scientific association, over the years it is enriched with scientific and paleontological collections collected by the biologist and physician Angelo Vazzana. Fortino Nord, also called Battery Pentimele Nord, dates back to the mid-sixteenth century. Despite being built with natural stones and bricks, it is in excellent condition. Its structure consists of a drawbridge and two columns in sandstone limestone. A special feature is the secret passage that leads to the port and then to the Castle.

Shortly before arriving at the town of Staiti, along the Comunale da Brancaleone, you will find a tourist sign indicating the direction for Tridetti. The apses of the small Church can be seen among the expanses of olive trees already from the street. To the tourist, the building declared a National Monument and dated the 11th century, is presented from the rear side. The main facade is facing the mountain (called Count Roger) covered by propellers and oaks. Further downstream the gaze is lost among the rows of citrus fruits and the colored stain of the oleanders.

Castello Normanno

The Norman castle of Caulonia was inhabited for long years by the Carafa family, princes of Roccella in the 15th century. Following their transfer, the ancient bulwark became the seat of the Castellans until the earthquake of 1783 almost completely destroyed it. Today, only the ruins remain of the castle with the city walls and the city gates.

The Torre dei Cavallari, commonly called Torre Camillari, is one of the 72 towers built by Fabrizio Pignatelli, along the Calabrian coast, to cope with the continuous Saracen raids. At the foot of the sixteenth-century tower, a Greek settlement was recently found, dating from the ceramic finds, to the fifth century BC.

In the lower part of Piazza Umberto I stands the Matrix Church of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in the Middle Ages and rebuilt during the Renaissance period. The basilical-type plant with three naves has marble elements from the 18th century. Behind the high altar, there is the funerary monument in white marble erected by Vincenzo Carafa in memory of his father Giacomo. The mausoleum, carved in low relief and rich in ornaments, has been declared a national monument.
