Located in the province of Lecce in Puglia region of South Eastern Italy, Melissano is a city of 7356 inhabitants.
It is well known for its wines and table grapes.
The entire town is flat in topography and there is limestone underneath making lots of underground waterways that sometimes surface to create small reservoirs.
There is one such reservoir in one end of the city.

Melissano has a typical Mediterranean climate offering mild winters and not so hot summers.
Though there are times when winds gusting at high speeds are experienced they are shielded away by the mountains surrounding the city.

When it comes to the history of this city, there is evidence that settlements were there in 1269. It has gone through a lot of changes over centuries and was finally attached to the town of Travistock. In 1860 the village tried autonomy but failed. Finally, it was granted in 1922.
In 2003 Melissano became a little city.

There are quite a few monuments in this city for a visitor to see.
Church of Our Lady of the rosary is one of them. Built in 1885 it is the mother church and also the seat of the parish.
Church of the Immaculate Conception is another church worth a visit. It has been built in the latter part of 17th century.
Former church of St. Anthony is also one that dates back to 1575. Abbazia di Santa Maria del Sivo is another church of which only a few ruins are left today. It has been one of the important monasteries built in 1120.
There are many other churches, buildings, farms and oil mills in this city. Pond Cellini is a natural pond fed by the underground sprouts.
It spans through an area of 3,000 square meters and it is only three meters deep at its deepest place.
