Monuments Country of Novara

The Satua dedicated to Carlo Borromeo (Arona, 1538 — Milan, 1584) Catholic archbishop and Italian cardinal is 35 meters tall, including a ten-story building! Originally, the project included it in marble but later it was made of copper.

Inaugurated on 23 March 1879 on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Battle of Novara, the Ossuary of the Fallen, erected at the Bicocca, was at the center of numerous controversy. The construction was wanted by a citizens' committee who launched a subscription for this purpose. The realization of the project was characterized by numerous clashes. The oppositions and controversy continued over the years. Only on 23 November 1901, a white marble cross was blessed affixed to the monument. The shrine houses the remains of soldiers of both belligerent armies.
