Castelluccio di Norcia — the miracle of flowering in the Monti Sibillini National Park
Castelluccio di Norcia, wonderful bloom, in the background the Sibillini Mountains
Actually, at the beginning I wanted to dedicate this article to Norcia, but then I decided to focus on a fraction of it not far away — Castelluccio by Norcia.
Castelluccio di Norcia is one of those small towns, so numerous in Italy, that under the aspect of a common town of the province, they hide treasures of everything respect. The treasure of Castelluccio is enclosed in the nature that surrounds it. The town stands alone on a hill from which it dominates the surrounding area from above. You can see that in Castelluccio there are not many inhabitants: its houses are old and abandoned. Time has also marked the streets. The permanent inhabitants, as in many isolated countries, the elderly, because young people are leaving in search of a better life.
At the foot of Castelluccio there is an immense plain, which continues for several kilometers, surrounded by mountains. In it, mainly lentils are grown (of which Castelluccio is known throughout Italy and which you can buy here directly from the producers) and the rest covers the green of the meadows on which they graze herds of sheep and horses. And here every year he repeats a real miracle of life, on which Castelluccio offers the best view. Between the end of May and the first days of July, this huge green plain begins to transform.
The green monotonous is replaced by a mosaic of a thousand colors: red, purple, yellow... The flowers, daffodils, poppies, violets, buttercups, offer the breathtaking show of colors of all kinds. It is difficult to specify when the flowering reaches its maximum, because it all depends on the conditions of the weather. However, if you arrive in Castelluccio on the third and last Sunday of June, you can combine the flowering show with the feast of the “Fiorita”.
