To start the winter season we decided to take advantage of early opening of ski lifts in the beautiful Bormio, Valtellina, in early November. Emerging out of the tunnels leading to the town, we found already found a winter scenery, snow-covered and truly impressive! The next morning we got up early as this is the perfect time to enjoy the slopes with the beautiful morning light. What's better than having breakfast in a mountain hut? It is worth it, believe me ... You will also have the privilege to ski on the World Cup slope, the magnificent Stelvio slope, in perfect condition. With the Altavaltellina ski pass it is possible to ski in the local ski area, but also in San Colombano and Valdidentro. Good alternatives for people who love change! After a wonderful skiing start (or a lazy morning!) we really wanted a hot bath, relaxing and rejuvenating in thermal waterto be fit for the evening. Bormio offers three thermal spas, including Bagni Nuovi and Bagni Vecchi, two authentic Roman baths brought to reality, to its tourists. Do not miss the relaxing evening under the stars during the weekend. Before dinner you can not give up the walk with an aperitif in the historical center where you can taste local specialties like dried beef, tasty cheeses and the famous wines of Valtellina. On this occasion, we have not been able to give up the classic dinner on the ski slopes, based on traditional dishes like the famous pizzoccheri, dried meat and wholesome cheeses. You reach the place by special cars or snowmobile and back to country skiing in the moonlight or torchlight, or by the same means of the first leg. It seems that the winter nights never end up ever in Bormio. Torchlight processions, village festivals, pubs, discos, piano bars and much more are waiting to entertain you in a friendly and international atmosphere! Bormio is a place I have been to for many years and each time gives me a reason not wait to return!
Our days always started with skiing, the ski slopes extend for more than 160 km between country and downhill, and the morning is the perfect time to start! The sun rises early in fact, to illuminate the white Alps. A guided tour on horseback in snowy woods, or just strolling in the pedestrian area are a good alternative for non-skiers. Original snow sculptures, the work of Italian and foreign artists, adorn the village during the winter months during the show Art on Ice. Don’t miss it! After a long morning of skiing it’s time for après-ski and shopping. We warmed up with a good hot chocolate in one of many typical pubs and then we continued with a peaceful stroll in the pedestrian center of Livigno, where various shops peep with their inviting windows. In the pre-Christmas period the traditional Christmas market is set up, and here we have found many small original gifts. The night falls early after a lot of movement, but couldn’t help thinking of a nice plate of pizzoccheri in the warmth! We opted for an typical dinner of Valtellina, in the name of the local traditional cuisine, enjoying the flavors of this land, such as dried beef, polenta, pizzoccheri, the cheese-making and countless other delights. The alternative for the following evening was the very original, wonderful skiing in the moonlight, with a dinner at a shelter in the mountains: truly unforgettable! And for those who have never tired, the nights of Livigno never end! Pubs, disco bars, apres ski, night clubs, wine bars and more are waiting to entertain you in a vibrant and international atmosphere.
Each year, the evening before the Festival of San Lorenzo which is dedicated to the small parish church, the community of Oga celebrates its patron saint with huge bonfires on the slopes of S.Colombano. Also visible from Bormio, the huge burning pyres are an attractive and exciting spectacle with flames rising high into the sky. The first bonfires to be lit is very close to the church, and gradually all the others in the area until the last in Tadeo. The bonfires symbolize the fires lit up a time that the population at the end of the harvest. Indeed, it was customary at that time to burn a sheaf of the harvest and then scatter the ashes over the fields in order to propitiate the fertility of the land for the following year.
