Fiesole is an ancient town in the heart of Tuscany. Because of its height over the surrounding countryside, the visitor will have a commanding view of little villages nestling amid fields and olives groves, often with church spires at their centres. Fiesole also offers ample hotel and guest accommodation, and a wide selection of restaurants.
Other attractions include the remains of Etruscan walls, the Roman baths and a Roman theatre, which is still in use. Many day trips run from the town, including tours to the city of Florence, eight kilometres away, and biking trips into the countryside.
The Amalfi coast journey is one of the most beautiful in all of Italy. While travelling along the Strada Statale 163, the visitor will see the mountains rising over the Mediterranean Sea. Among the towns on the route are Positano, Ravello and Amalfi. In Positano, the Church of Santa Maria Assunta is a major attraction. Visitors can also take boat trips along the coast. Ravello boasts many historic and beautiful buildings, including the ancient Duomo and the Villa Rufolo. The Ravello Festival takes place every summer, and includes popular, opera and classical music. The town of Amalfi hosts many festivals throughout the year, including the Historical Regata, a traditional rowing competition.
The beautiful province of Emilia-Romagna in northeast Italy is the location of Ravenna and many more historic towns. The region encompasses the northern Apennines, giving visitors the opportunity to follow mountain trails by hiking and motoring. Rimini and other towns on the Adriatic Sea are also within reach. These are just a small selection of countryside holidays in Italy.
