One day in Assisi...

Spending a day in Assisi, Italy, is like stepping back in time. I wandered the winding cobblestone streets uphill and down, looking in shop windows and just soaking in the atmosphere of a medieval city in Europe. While going to Assisi, set your itinerary in a way that you will not waste time searching this large area.

If arriving by train or bus start at the Portiuncula, which is located near the train station in the valley, in which St. Clare's inncorrupt body is located inside the Marian Shrine of "Our Lady of the Angels." Here you will find the original small Church which St. Francis first built.

There are buses that will transport you to the upper part of Assisi to the enormous Shrine of St. Francis. As you walk through the cobblestone streets you can also find small restaurants where you can stop for refreshments or something to eat. When you enter the Basilica of St. Francis, start at the upper level and work yourself down to the lower level and basement. allow yourself at least 3hrs inside, so as to take in the religious and historic beauty of the medevial church along with the many Masses that may be said here.

For the full tour and time here in Assisi give yourself or group at least 6 hrs in total. Assisi is a beautiful, clean town, boasting all the characteristics of the "old world".

Walls, towers and gates

Torre del Popolo

The Tower was built in the 13th century to host the Captain of the People, who lived there together with his family for several years. The building is 47 meters high and its architecture has been modified over the years. The current appearance stands out from the red stone base, and the shield on the archkey, testimonials from previous owners. The College of Notaries, which was based in the building, will remain a very important part in the history of the tower.

Museums

Pinacoteca Comunale

The Art Gallery is housed in the Palazzo Vallemani which was built in the 17th century. It is composed of a rich collection of paintings and frescoes from the 14th-17th centuries. A large space has been dedicated to the artists of the Giottesque school, among whom we can name Andrea and Tiberio of Assisi, Puccio Capanna, and Dono Doni. It is worth mentioning the Madonna in Majesty by Giotto and a Virgin with the Child of Perugino who are present in the Art Gallery and who are among the most visited.

Deep in the quiet of Umbria’s countryside, Le Cerque is an oasis of peace surrounded by 22 hectares of park, partly dedicated to our own production of olive oil and wine. The original farmhouse, recently renovated, dates back to the 1600s and benefits from a magical 360-degree view of the surrounding hills. The pool on top of the hill offers the best panorama that stretches out as far as the eye can see. Just two hours away from Florence and Rome, in the heart of Italy, Le Cerque is an ideal place to reach several historic towns in Umbria and Tuscany while resting in an oasis of nature. The only noises that can be heard are the distant bells of the nearby churches and the chirping of birds. Le Cerque is what we Italians call agriturismo, a farm stay where you can reawaken traditional habits, living closely with nature and eating healthy, locally-produced food, with the best comforts of modern life.
