Populonia, a trip back to the middle ages

Populonia, Livorno Tuscany
Populonia, Livorno Tuscany

What most people want from their holidays is the chance to relax and visit new and exciting things in a place they have never been to before. Luckily, there are thousands of great destinations in the world to get just that, but there is no doubt that Italy is one of the most loved and visited ones, and that is because it has everything you could possibly want to find.

Apart from the more popular destinations such as Venice, Florence and Rome, there are many little towns full of character and things to offer to its tourists, and that is the case of Populonia. This little town in the province of Livorno, in the region of Tuscany, used to be part of an extremely important commercial route during Etruscan times, and you will be able to tell because not much has changed since that period, and that's one of the reasons which makes it a great place to visit.

The first thing you must see once you get to Populonia is the incredible Populonia Park, where you will get the chance to visit remainings which date back to the 5th century before Christ. The most impressive thing you will see there will be the necropolis and a small lab where experimental archeology is still practiced to this day. The best thing about the Populonia Park is you can decide to get a private tour and find out as much as you possibly could thanks to the official guides which will tell you everything there is to know about it as well as about all the necropolis which can be found in it, which are definitely the main attraction of the whole of Populonia and the main reason why this little town becomes more popular by the day.

Then there is also the Gasparri Etruscan Museum which is in the middle of the town of Populonia. There you will be able to see countless items found in some of the necropolis of the town which date back to the 8th and 5th century before Christ. Some of these items include a sarcophagus and different vases. But even just deciding to go for a walk around the town will be an exciting experience. Because the fact that the houses there are more modern, you will still be able to find remainings of all walls which used to protect the town, which will make you feel like you have left the present behind and have gone back to centuries ago when things were very different. And if you decide to visit this exciting town in the hottest periods of the years, consider yourself lucky because that will give you the chance of spending some great days on the beach as well as visiting all the interesting places I told you about before.

The Baratti beach is a great example of an unspoilt beach surrounded by nature, one where you will be able to relax under the strong Italian sun and go for a nice swim in its clean waters after a long day of walking around and discovering everything there is to discover in Populonia.
