Its first name was "Stracchino of Gorgonzola", by the fact that it was made from milk of "rag" cows, the dialect “tired”, for the transhumance. The town of Gorgonzola was in fact a place of rest for the cattle coming down from the Pre-Alps because it was a quiet area full of fodder, and also had close to a city like Milan where one can easily carry and sell the product of milk processing.

A tradition says that the Gorgonzola was brought about by love and revenge: in a farm, in San Giorgio, a dairyman in love with a young peasant girl, daughter of the tenant. Arguing with the man, the young decided to take revenge on the cheese: he did not watch the curd, so the owner, adding the new milk the next morning, lost two milkings. From that episode was born the Gorgonzola, a cheese which quickly passed the flavor test and became famous throughout the world. It is now one of the few Italian cheeses to have obtained the so-called PDO, protected designation of origin, recognized in Europe.

The town of Gorgonzola, renowned thanks to Manzoni, celebrates its famous product each year with a festival dedicated to it. Among the narrow streets of the village, yet ancient and well preserved, there are stalls everywhere and you can attend conferences on the production of this cheese. Though easily reached by the modernity of Milan, reached by three metro lines, Gorgonzola retains its Medieval charm and invites you to visit its beautiful places such as the Court of the Cloisters, the Church of SS. Gervasio and Protasio and Villa Serbelloni, with a spectacular park with a lake adjoining the edge of the Martesana River.
