Camogli: a beautiful working fishing village on the Italian Riviera

Camogli is a beautiful working fishing village on the Portofino peninsula in Liguria. Depending on the time of day, the picturesque harbour is full of small boat owners landing their catch, repairing their nets, or otherwise getting on with making a living from the sea.

The promenade by the harbour has several restaurants offering the freshest of fish, which can be eaten in spectacular scenery: the town is bounded on one side by a forested promontory carving out a bay, with a small village perched precariously on its side which can often be lost in clouds in misty weather. Although the village has a couple of good hotels and several other more modest types of tourist accommodation, its lack of a beach means it isn't packed with holidaymakers and is a genuine northern Italian fishing town, although visitors can be well rewarded by enjoying the relaxing atmosphere around the harbour.

If you want to explore beyond Camogli, walking in the surrounding countryside is a little strenuous but rewarding, while the town has a station on the coastal railway line which winds dramatically through beautiful villages and resorts such as Rapallo and Portofino, with the larger centres of Genoa and La Spezia only a short ride away and perfect for day trips. There are also boat trips available to neighbouring villages when sea conditions are good.
