Alatri: art and religion

Alatri is a small village south of Lazio, in Ciociaria.
The town is famous for its massive walls that enclose it and which are source of many myths concerning the founding of the city. Inside the circle is the medieval city, known for its Pelasgians Acropolis and many other artistic and cultural riches that make Alatri a real gem.

The visitor can touch with hands each piece of the history of the town, which houses many churches and buildings in excellent condition; well-known are the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore and San Francesco.

Among the civilian structures, we mention Palazzo Gottifredo, dating from the XIII century, now housing an interesting Museum, offering high-level cultural activities and preserving unique ancient Roman remains of in its kind.

One of the main attractions are, however, the Alatri religious revivals. For here, in the Cathedral of St. Paul, is preserved the relic of the Miracle of the Incarnate, recognized by a papal bull in 1200 as a true miracle.

Every year many believers go to pray before the relic and in memory of the event and the city dedicates each year in March a three-day commemoration. Also in the religious sphere, the re-enactment of the Living Passion and the Good Friday are famous. There are many tourists at Easter rush to follow the event which dates back to 700.

We must also mention the warm hospitality and the cuisine of the town of Alatri, where you can enjoy a simple and unique culinary art.

What To See near Alatri

Guarcino (8 Km)

Eremo di S. Agnello

The Hermitage of S. Agnello is located in the Garcino mountains. This is almost imperceptible to the naked eye, as it is immersed in vegetation. It is assumed to have been built in the tenth century by a rich Neapolitan family. Precisely the fact that it is so isolated and distanced from the rest of the country, makes it an even more beautiful and suggestive place. In fact, it's the ideal place for everyone who wants to meditate and break away from the chaotic daily life.
