Valli di Comacchio - natural beauty and serenity

Time spent in Valli di Comacchio, a place of exceptional natural beauty within the Po Delta Park, will ensure a holiday with a difference.

Literally translated as 'fish basins of Comacchio', the wetlands area is one of the largest lagoon systems in Italy. They are home not only to rare flora and fauna, but also to many waterfowl.

To appreciate the tranquillity of the area, book a birdwatching excursion into the wetlands, a boat tour along the valleys or, between July and September, a trip to the flamingo nesting sites.

The marshlands are not the only attraction in Emilia Romagna. The cities of Bologna, Modena and Ravenna are all part of the region and each holds its own special attraction. It's the home of Italy's most famous car designers, including Ferrari, Lamborghini, Maserati, and Ducati - you can visit the Farrari race track, factory and museum just outside of Modena. Bologna is home to Europe's oldest university, together with many picturesque Renaissance buildings.

Some of the most spectacular (and most important) mosaics of Italy are preserved in the churches and buildings of Ravenna. And if you are an opera fan, no holiday will be complete without a visit to Busetto, birthplace of the great composer Verdi. The National Museum of Guiseppe Verdi is housed in an elegant palazzo.

The regional food of Emilia Romagna is some of the finest cuisine in Italy. Prosciutto di Parma, parmesan cheese and the balsamic vinegar of Modena are just some of the foods which originated here. And don't miss local specialities like tortellini and lasagna.

Ravenna - Castles, palaces and mansions

Palazzo di Teodorico

When we talk about the Palazzetto of Teodorico, we want to indicate the architectural remains sites which are not far from the church of Sant 'Apollinare Nuovo. According to many researchers, the remains would belong to a guard or, in the opinion of others, an atrium-porch in front of the church dedicated to San Salvatore ad Calchi. At the round tower, you can admire the remains of some mosaic floors found during the archaeological excavations.

Ravenna - Monuments

Tomba di Dante Alighieri

Located in Via Dante Alighieri, 9, in the heart of the city. There is the funerary monument erected in honor of the great poet who spent the last years of his life in the city of Ravenna. Commissioned by Cardinal Luigi Valenti Gonzaga to the architect Camillo Morigia, it was built between 1780 and 1781. The tomb, covered with marble and stuccoes, looks like a Roman sarcophagus. To be noted the beautiful bas relief dated 1483 and placed over the tomb.

Ravenna - Churches and places of worship

Duomo di Ravenna

The Cathedral of Ravenna or Basilica Ursina is certainly the most important sacred building in the city, built by Gianfranco Buonamici in the 18th century. The structure holds faith in the ancient cathedral, dedicated to the Holy Resurrection. In fact, this had a semicircular apse on the outside, and polygonal inside, as well as the current structure. Inside it is possible to admire beautiful frescoes and two early Christian sarcophagi. Very characteristic is the cylindrical bell tower outside the Duomo that dates back to the eleventh century.
