Situated near the confluence of rivers Tordino and Vezzola Teramo is the capital of Teramo province that comes under Abruzzo region of Central Italy. Since the city spans from the snow capped Gran Sasso peaks down to the Adriatic coast, it is a rare type of city that allows one to travel to either end from city center in just half an hour. Income generation for the city is mainly through agriculture but it has a vibrant industrial sector that manufactures textiles, ceramics, building materials and foods. This town was called the Intermina which means between the rivers. It was an important Municipium under Roman rule. As Roman Empire fell, the state of the city declined and became an isolated one. Its location of being separated from the rest of the country by mountains also must have helped this situation.
During 14th and 15th centuries, local families were fighting for domination. However, this city became a part of united Italy in 1860. For summer vacationers there are two great monuments to visit. One is the ancient Roman Theater and the other is the majestic Cathedral. There are many events that are conducted around these monuments. Teramo Literary Prize and Interamnia Handball Cup are two of the premier events. Athletes from many countries in the world participate in the latter. There are many other monuments and sites where the visitors to this city could tour around. Many of them are remains of churches and such other ancient structures. Present day Teramo is a city with a population of 64,100 people. The city is easily accessible by motor way. Gran Sasso tunnel that was built recently has made it easier to commute from this city to the rest of Italy. Though it is an ancient city skyline of Teramo shows more recent structures than the ancient ones.
