Siena Cathedral Museum
Visiting Siena is a very pleasant experience event thanks to all the beautiful museums the city can offer. If you have got some time to spend in Siena, after having visited all the beautiful and fascinating streets and squares of this medieval jewel you should save at least one day to see at least two or three of the City’s museums.
The most important one is probably the Dome itself, with its Libreria Piccolomini which presents paintings about the life of Pope Pio II as well as precious sculptures and marble masterworks. Behind the Dome there is the Baptistery, which is worth of a visit because of the baptisimal font by Jacopo della Quercia, with its bronze panels describing the life of St. John the Baptist, absolutely wonderful.
Another one of the most important museums of Siena is the Opera del Duomo museum, which is on the exact place where the Dome should have been built.
The gallery of this fascinating museum is in fact located next to the Dome, in the point in which should have been the right side of the so-called New Dome, a project of enlargement of the cathedral which has never been completed. Inside this museum you can observe a lot of sacred Italian works of painters and sculptors of 1300/1500 period which come from the cultural heritage of the Dome itself.
To end in the most effective way your Siena museum trip you can then visit the Civic Museum in Piazza del Campo and go up until the top of the Torre del Mangia, a tower from which you can see a beautiful panorama on all the square and Siena itself.
