Palazzo Reale

The Royal Palace

The Royal Palace was designed and partly built by Domenico Fontana and was in the early years of '600. From 1600 to 1946, the Royal Palace was the seat of monarchical power not only in Naples, but also of Italy and throughout the South, passing by the Spanish Viceroy (until 1707), Austrians (until 1734), Bourbon (until 1860) and finally the Savoy (until 1946).

After being damaged by fire in 1837, the palace was restored by the architect Gaetano Genovese, who built a new facade to the sea.

Here, you can visit the Royal Apartment, which since 1919 is part of the museum 's Town House, the Royal Chapel, the seventeenth-century Sala Regia, and see a typical Court Theatre.

It is a very rich museum complex. The gardens are free to visit except for the roof garden. Currently, the National Library in Naples, is based at this building.
