The core of the building, which encompasses the oldest buildings, was built between the '500 and '600, work on the decorations inside were completed in '700, while the two wings at right angles to date from '800. In this last phase of construction is also wonderful with a single staircase ramp leading to the main floor, which is located in a porch overlooking the garden.

The original furnishings of the palace with frescoes and tapestries on the walls were recovered.
In the Bridal Chamber was found the original alcove and embroidered silk fabrics of the eighteenth century.

The ground floor is devoted to temporary exhibitions, while on the main floor are displayed the paintings in the collection donated by the Grand Duke Leopold II of Lorraine in Lucca and the rest of the Mansi collection. Here we see among other works of Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese, Ghirlandaio, Andrea del Sarto, Guido Reni.

On the second floor, in the Gallery, you can admire works by painters of the nineteenth century Lucca, as Pompeo Batoni, Nocchi Bernardino, Stefano Tofanelli. On this plan was also set up a section representative of the production of fine fabrics, rich source of Lucca.
In the collection, whose pieces dating from the end of the 500 to 700, there is also the liturgical vestment of Damascus.

The latter was the excellence of textiles produced in Lucca. The weaving workshop with its traditional instruments suggests a way to produce these textiles, of which we see about 80 samples from different centuries. There is also a collection of Coptic textiles dating from the VI-X century.
