Beautiful, impressive and wonderful: the Monastery of the Carthusians near the city of Pavia.
Gian Galeazzo Visconti, Duke of Milan, was the founder of the complex and in 1396 together with his wife and children laid the foundation stone for the abbey.
The project was big and ambitious and began to be built near the family's hunting park. The location was well chosen, in the middle of Milan and Pavia, the first and second city in the territory.
The work was long, intensive and complicated. Only a hundred years later the church was consecrated and the Sforza had taken the place of the Visconti. The finished things turned out to be a complex and beautiful structure, rich in decorations and frescoes. The monks lived immediately in the buildings under construction, the Duke had, in fact, donated him the monastery with the clause that they had to commit part of the earnings to the completion and beautification of the works. So they did and the result, which we can still admire today, was amazing.
The guided tour by one of the friars takes you to see the interior of the Charterhouse and the beautiful garden with small cells.
The church with a white marble façade with statues of prophets and saints, surprises you when you enter with the high ceiling painted in blue and gold starry. Stars are also found in the floor, in the doors.
Beautiful stained glass windows and works carved in wood, especially the choir of monks. The high altar executed in marble, bronze and precious stones is of a rare beauty.
The two cloisters, the small one with the garden in the center and communicates with various environments such as the church, the library and the refectory. The large cloister overlooks the cells where the monks once lived. Large homes were with the vegetable garden to be grown in front.
A place of worship and spirituality that in its silence transmits the love and dedication of the friars to all visitors.
