Tofano barracks was built during the 18th century at the behest of the King of Naples Charles III on the place where the Doge's Palace stood. The Barracks had the function of hosting the military and freeing citizens from the duty to receive them in their homes. It was also named Grand Quarter as it represented a real military citadel in a strategic position for the city.
