Loving the sea and relaxing listening to the sound of the waves and observing their rhythmic movement is sometimes not enough to enjoy a pleasant beach holiday. For this reason, Camaiore is the perfect place to have fun and never get bored. Thanks to its location, it extends from the Apuan Alps to the Tyrrhenian Sea, and to its very wide beach with very fine sand, over four kilometers long, from Marina di Pietrasanta in Viareggio there are bathing establishments, modern and equipped with everything you need. Parallel to the sea, and the beautiful promenade stretches: embellished with palm trees and flowerbeds, surrounded by mountains and full of bars, restaurants, entertainment venues and open shops till late.
The hinterland of Camaiore hides characteristic and ancient hills villages such as those of Monteggiori from which it is possible to admire a evocative panorama, Fibbiano with a medieval look, and Greppolungo from which the paths to Monte Gabbieri start.

Fascinating is the visit to the artistic workshops of Pietrasanta, where artisans and artists work marble.

In Piazza San Bernardino, next to the Bell Tower, is the Palazzo del Vicario, the current headquarters of the Cassa di Risparmio di Lucca; wonderful the theater of the Olivo, which is the oldest in Versilia, built in the 16th century.

Going along this beautiful resort is the Villa Borbone del Pianore, a luxury historic home surrounded by an exuberant park of exuberant plants and exuberant plants and indigenous.

The eighteenth-century villa of Maria Theresa di Savoia, Duchess of Lucca, was formerly a mill, to which a chapel had been annexed, the part called the Duke's Palace & Roberto is enriched with marbles dating back to the 19th century. The original structure of the villa, inhabited by the Malpigli family of Lucca, dates back to the fourteenth and fifteenth century; later it became the property of Montecatini in the 17th century and later passed to Graziani. Today it has become an accommodation facility.

There are many reasons to visit this small beautiful Tuscan city, at the second place in “The most charming places in Europe” chart made by Forbes Magazine. Lucca is a calm and elegant city, with ancient shops and modern boutiques.

In Lucca you can find the ancient historical heritage made by monuments, medieval streets, renaissance palaces and historical houses. Rich in squares among which the beautiful Piazza Ovale, with Lucca’s tastes market still alive. Lucca is a bycicle city, in the sense that bikes lovers will find in Lucca an ideal place where to ride and maybe take a ride trip on the medieval walls of the city, where has been built a bike track especially for this purpose.

From Lucca’s walls you can admire Guinigi’s Tower, Saint Michael’s Church, the market’s square. If you visit the city during the summer Lucca offers its visitors a total of 14 public fountains where you can have a break drinking some fresh water, a number incredibly high for a such small city.

Lucca’s citizens too use to fill their bottles at these fountains, whose water, according to the legend, gave beauty to the ugly women and preserved the beautiful ones.

Visiting the “Manifattura Tabacchi” is, for every visitor of the City, an obliged stop in a trip to Lucca, especially for smokers: this Tobacco’s factory is one of Italy’s oldest ones and still working, and in it you can assist to all the phases of production of cigar from tobacco’s washing until the real cigar’s maturation.

A day inside lucca's medieval walls

The amazing City of Lucca, in the beautiful Tuscany, hosts an incredible historical and artistic heritage, with many gorgeus places to visit and a very interesting history to tell its visitors.

One of the most charming small cities in Italy, Lucca is considered abroad a real italian paradise and that is why it is so renowed especially in anglo saxon countries.

I’ve been for the first time in Lucca the last spring with my girlfriend and I spent two entire days in this beautiful city, especially because my girlfriend fell litteraly in love with it! Absolutely worth of a visit in Lucca: Lucca’s cathedral, the Dome, founded in VI century and rebuilt in honour of Saint Martin which hosts a lot of paintings and frescoes really wionderful such as the “Madonna with the child and the saints”.

Interesting a short tour in Napoleon Square (Piazza Napoleone), considered the heart of the City and where it is located the statue of Maria Luigia di Borbone. Do not forget to visit the Mansi Palace, hosting a wonderful painting museum, Villa Guinigi’s National Museum, the Roman Theater and the wonderful San Frediano Church.

If you want to stay in Lucca more than a day (which can be enough depending on your interest because the city is very small) you can spend less sleeping outside the medieval walls of the city, in the modern part of Lucca, hotels list.

The historical center is undoubtely more charming, but also more and more expensive and it is anyway easily reachable by walking from outside the walls in just a few minutes.

The Church of San Michele in Foro

Church of San Michele in Foro, Lucca, Tuscany

The church of San Michele in Foro along with its piazza stand at the center of the old city of Lucca, where the Roman forum used to be.

Construction of the church began in the 11th century, the campanile was completed in the 12th century, and finally the Romanesque facade was added in the 13th century. The facade is actually much taller than the main structure of the church, and different metals had to be used to make sure it would be sturdy enough to resist strong winds.
The same goes for the 4 meters tall statue of Archangel St. Michael, to whom the church is dedicated, which sits on top of the facade.

The church is open to visitors daily free of charge, but unfortunately it was too dark inside to take pictures without a flash. There were, however, a couple of interesting paintings, including one by Filippino Lippi.

The Piazza di San Michele is surrounded by lovely 15th and 16th century palazzi, many of which have now been converted into banks. There were a couple of nice little cafes, and a man was playing the accordion when we were there. Definitely a good place to stop by for coffee in the morning!
