In the heart of the Pennine Alps, at the foot of Monte Rosa in Valle d'Aosta stands the delightful mountain town of Gressoney-Saint-Jean. We are in the Aosta Valley area at 1,385 meters above sea level in the middle of the Lys valley. Valle that takes its name from the homonymous stream. Equidistant from Piedmont and Switzerland, Gressoney-Saint-Jean has deservedly carved out over the years a prestigious destination position suitable for tourism in all seasons. The town is characterized by the predominant presence of the Walser community: the ancient settlers who came from Germany in the Alpine valleys, around the 8th century, to dedicate oneself to breeding and pastoralism. The cultural heritage left by the settlers is still reflected in the language spoken by the Gressonarians: the typical Walser dialect of German origin, but in reality well different from pure German. Tourists who arrive in Gressoney find themselves immediately immersed in a picturesque and breathtaking setting, characterized by the imposing Lyskamm glacier and the familiar presence of Monte Rosa whose majesty has nothing to envy the glacier. A real paradise to explore for mountaineering enthusiasts. The crossing of the Lyskamm is in fact one of the most fascinating and evocative that can be accomplished along the entire arc of the Alpine chain. The area is rich in infrastructure dedicated to winter sports lovers: from alpine skiing to Nordic skiing. The latter is divided along a 25 km track surrounded by woods and glaciers where, in January, the prestigious international race of Monterosalauf also takes place. A few steps from the town, another beautiful natural oasis is the one represented by Lake Gover, of artificial origin and with the enchanting emerald green waters. Perfect for a walk in the open air and pure among pine and fir trees, enchanting to admire all the grandeur of the Monte Rosa chain reflected in its waters. The lake also lends itself perfectly to the territorial vocation of multi-seasonal tourism: ice skating in winter and sport fishing in summer are the main activities that can be practiced there. If then from the lake you want to take a pleasant walk through a path in the woods far from impervious, called the Queen's Walk, in half an hour or so From there it is possible to reach the Savoy Castle. This is the favorite tourist residence by Queen Margaret; built in 1894 it immediately became a destination for her holidays. Inside it is also possible to visit the very rich botanical garden. Another renowned half of the core of the castle is the Romitage Carducci, a little house that the queen dedicated to the supreme poet to celebrate the esteem and mutual admiration that intervened with each other. The one towards the Lyskamm Glacier is not the only mountaineering crossing that can be made from Gressoney. In the summer season, using different ski lifts, you can take different excursions in the Aosta Valley. One of the most loved by mountaineers is the one that leads from Gressoney to Courmayeur. The destinations and cultural attractions of the valley are not limited to the aforementioned Savoy Castle. Particularly interesting is the Beck Peccoz Wildlife Museum, with its four thematic exhibition halls. From the wildlife of the Valle d'Aosta (deer, chamois, roe deer) to the rich assortment of weapons belonging to the Beck-Peccoz family, here is just a little taste of it ograve; that you can admire inside the museum.
