Discovering Grottammare Alta
Elegant buildings in Grottammare Alta, Ascoli Piceno
Along the Adriatic coast in the Marche region it could be one of the countless seaside cities that look a little alike all, to be honest. But Grottammare has something more, something special. Behind the long and sandy beach, on top of a mountain you see an ancient medieval town called Grottammare Alta.
The town is well protected, you only get there on foot along the cobblestone alleys. The fortified walls date back to the 16th century when violent clashes and attacks forced his Fermi lords to build additional defenses.
In the upper city are to be admired, for example, Piazza Peretti, the central square on which overlooks the beautiful Teatro dell'Arancio, called so for the large citrus tree that was in the square, the equally beautiful Palazzo Comunale Ravenna with frescoed walls and ceilings, the church of San Giovanni Battista and the tower civic.
Other buildings to note are the sixteenth-century church of Sant'Agostino, that of Santa Lucia and the castle. In addition to these cultural beauties you will also find many restaurants to enjoy the delicious local and regional dishes with specialties from the Marche region.
Instead, the most recent part of the municipality is located close to the beaches, divided from the old part by railway and state road. An example of 'modern' construction, from the beginning of the 20th century is a small villa Matricardi which was built on the seafront.
At that time tourism began to develop, which then became one of the most profitable sources of the local economy. The promenade is well maintained and surrounded by hundreds of tall palm trees and of course here you will find all the well-equipped bathing establishments.
