Erice — a dive into the Middle Ages

It's cold dog outside, the sun is gone, you don't know where and I can't do anything but warm up with a cup of hot tea and memories of the hot Sicily< /strong >, and precisely Erice.

This small village perched on top of the homonymous mountain is located in western Sicily (about ten kilometers from Trapani ) and if you happen to go on vacation around here, you can't miss it at all.

The village is a perfect example of a typical medieval village, with its characteristic cobbled streets, narrow and very steep, the inner courtyard flourished, the sumptuous medieval palaces and churches (they say there are more than 60). It really seems like time has stopped here.

Especially if you happen to be there in the winter time when there are few people and the streets, immersed in the fog that after a certain hour reaches Erice, seem almost like unreal.

To get to Erice you have two possibilities: to come by car along the very nice road, but uphill and full of hairpin bends, or take the < strong>cable car in Trapani to reach the summit in about ten minutes. (Clearly the solution is not suitable for those who suffer from dizziness).

Dedicated to Erice at least a couple of hours (obviously better than that) to be able to visit it calmly. Among many monuments whose number makes the head turn not to be missed are the imposing helimo-Punic walls, the castle of Venus (from the top you can see a splendid panorama) and the Balio towers, the The Mother Church, the Balio Gardens.

When you have enough of it or to let your legs rest take a stop to taste one of the local specialties.

In the pastry shop you will find the characteristics “Genoesi”, tasty panzerotti stuffed with soft milk cream and flavored with Marsala, or < strong>almond pastries garnished with candied cherries.

Tips on the beaches of Sicily - Scopello and the Zingaro

We started our journey through the beaches of north-western Sicily from San Vito lo Capo. Moving to the east we meet the natural reserve lo Zingaro which is a real landscape and natural paradise of Sicily & lt; /em>. This beautiful nature reserve is located between the municipalities of Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito lo Capo and is natural habitat of numerous species of fauna and flora. Immersed in nature are also the many beaches that certainly do not lack in this stretch of coast and that each year attract many tourists and travelers, both for the beauty of the landscape that for the crystal clear waters of the sea that bathes them. These enchanting shores are formed by a rocky crust and punctuated by numerous coves. To get an idea of the many beaches of the Zingaro, which are then among the most beautiful beaches in the province of Trapani and perhaps all of Sicily, there I recommend renting a boat and arriving by sea in the various coves. In this way you can admire this stretch of coast in all its fullness, fully enjoying all its charm and beauty. In the reserve there are many tour operators or the same fishermen who offer the opportunity to take a boat ride along the coast. Continuing east we arrive at the beaches of Scopello; the Faraglioni beach, called so because of the two big rocks that rise in the middle of the sea, not so far from the shore. We are always in the Zingaro nature reserve and this cove contains in itself all the characteristics of the area. The beach is not very big, but it's definitely worth going there for the fine white sand and the crystal clear sea with rocks. The descent to the beach is not very easy. It takes, from the main road, a fifteen minutes walk. But the effort will certainly be paid off. If you decide to reach this bay, then trouble forgetting mask and snorkel for a bit of snorkeling and to admire the beauty of the seabed. But be careful, while swimming, to the many boats that are always mooring not so far from the shore. In Scopello you can also decide to stay a few more days, perhaps staying in the rooms created in the ancient tuna. In the area it is worth a stop, perhaps for a few hours of relaxation and a swim in a fairytale sea, also the beach of Guadalopa. This is located on the road that connects the town of Castellammare del Golfo to Scopello, traveling in the direction of Trapani. It is a beach with many small pebbles and pebbles, and a sea with green reflections. It is one of the most convenient beaches to reach in the area and for this reason also one of the busiest, especially if you choose to go there in the high season. Here there are also various tourist and beach facilities ready to satisfy the most varied requests of tourists and bathers. How to get there A29 Palermo-Mazara del Vallo motorway, exit Castellammare del Golfo. Take the SS 187 Palermo-Trapani to the junction of the Zingaro-Scopello Natural Reserve
