Erice — a dive into the Middle Ages

cold dog outside, the sun is gone, you don't know where and I can't do anything but warm up with a cup of hot tea and memories of the hot Sicily< /strong >, and precisely Erice.

This small village perched on top of the homonymous mountain is located in western Sicily (about ten kilometers from Trapani ) and if you happen to go on vacation around here, you can't miss it at all.

The village is a perfect example of a typical medieval village, with its characteristic cobbled streets, narrow and very steep, the inner courtyard flourished, the sumptuous medieval palaces and churches (they say there are more than 60). It really seems like time has stopped here.

Especially if you happen to be there in the winter time when there are few people and the streets, immersed in the fog that after a certain hour reaches Erice, seem almost like unreal.

To get to Erice you have two possibilities: to come by car along the very nice road, but uphill and full of hairpin bends, or take the < strong>cable car in Trapani to reach the summit in about ten minutes. (Clearly the solution is not suitable for those who suffer from dizziness).

Dedicated to Erice at least a couple of hours (obviously better than that) to be able to visit it calmly. Among many monuments whose number makes the head turn not to be missed are the imposing helimo-Punic walls, the castle of Venus (from the top you can see a splendid panorama) and the Balio towers, the The Mother Church, the Balio Gardens.

When you have enough of it or to let your legs rest take a stop to taste one of the local specialties.

In the pastry shop you will find the characteristics “Genoesi”, tasty panzerotti stuffed with soft milk cream and flavored with Marsala, or < strong>almond pastries garnished with candied cherries.
