Inaugurated on 23 March 1879 on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the Battle of Novara, the Ossuary of the Fallen, erected at the Bicocca, was at the center of numerous controversy. The construction was wanted by a citizens' committee who launched a subscription for this purpose. The realization of the project was characterized by numerous clashes. The oppositions and controversy continued over the years. Only on 23 November 1901, a white marble cross was blessed affixed to the monument. The shrine houses the remains of soldiers of both belligerent armies.

The building was located in the property of the noble Tettoni, citizens of Novara. Inside there was a fresco depicting an effigy of the Nursing Madonna. The fresco, then, underwent several movements and in the 1900s from the southern wall was transferred to a frame, later moved to the original wall with the restorations of the 1970s. In 1973 the work was stolen.
