Churches and places of worship Milan

A day at the discovery of milan's churches

Milano, Chiesa di San Fedele e statua di A. Manzoni
Milano, Chiesa di San Fedele e statua di A. Manzoni

Milan, despite its fame as the most important financial and economic centre of the entire Italy, presents also a rich historical and cultural heritage, which can be particularly admired in its many and beautiful churces.

Every time I visit Milan I do not miss to make a walk in one of the beautiful religious buildings of this city, including the Dome, the most famous one, and San Babile, probably the second best known church of Milan. Other churces worth of a visit in Milan are, with no doubt, the beautiful Saint Mark’s Church in the old quarter of Brera, built in about 1254, or the Sain Sepulchre Church, really wonderful and of ancient tradition, as it has been builti in 1030.

Another one among the most famous religious buildings of Milan is the Basilica of Saint Ambrogio, the saint patron of the city which is beloved in almost all Lombardy region: built by order of the Bishop Ambrogio, who only later became the Saint Patrone of Milan, is one of the most fascinating churches of the city and it is located just next to the Catholic University of Sacred Heart, one of the most ancient universities of Milan.

The convent and church of Santa Maria delle Grazie, where it is the magnificent work of Leonardo Da Vinci's 'L’Ultima Cena', is another location not to be missed.

To visit this delicious complex and admire the masterpiece of Leonardo you have to book in advance your own ticket: infact, it could take you months to reserve a visit to this location, one of the most visited of entire Italy and one of the most appreciated in Europe.

Rotonda della Besana

It is a structure in late Baroque style, the work of the architects Arrigoni, Croce and Raffagno. Its construction dates back to the 17th century, initially it was a cemetery for the dead of the Ca' Granda. The original core of the complex is the church which has a plan in the shape of a cross. An octagonal dome crowned by the slender lantern rises at the intersection of the arms. Since 1958 the complex has been owned by the Municipality and is often used as an exhibition space for exhibitions, screenings and cultural events.
