Composed of three naves, separated by a double row of ancient Roman columns of gray granite, it suffered numerous damage due to earthquakes. After a series of restorations, in 2001 it was reopened for worship.

The Basilica, to which a Franciscan temple is attached to it, is of neoclassical inspiration, with a Greek cross plan.
