Most beautiful city of the mortals

Temple of Agrigento That is how, the ancient Greek poet Pindar (518 BC- 483 BC), defined the city of Agrigento (518 BC - 438 BC), to witness the splendor and power that city (at that time called Akragas), reached during the nearly four centuries of Greek domination. The splendor and power of Akragas are now part of history, but Agrigento with its Valley of the Temples still continues to be one of the most fascinating remains of the Hellenistic period.

Monuments, museums and natural beauty Undisputed symbol of the ancient city is the archaeological complex, including the Temple of Concordia, which is considered to be one of the best preserved temples of the entire Greek world. The city's history is characterized by a succession of rulers, from the Hellenistic civilization to the Roman period, from Arab incursions to Norman domination. Then Swabians, the Angioni, the Aragonese, the Spanish, the Savoy, the Habsburgs and the Bourbons. The city, as indeed all of Trinacria (former Greek name for Sicily, alluding to the triangular shape of the island), is a real journey through the millennial history, told in episodes.

Among its cultural treasures, Agrigento has a temple dedicated to Demeter, the goddess of flowering. According to the ancient Greeks, Demeter allowed the rebirth of life with the arrival of a long summer season, which lasted for eight months. The beginning of the long Sicilian summer is characterized by the occurrence of an event of extraordinary natural beauty, - the flowering of the orange trees, which occurs in Agrigento and large parts of Sicily from the month of April on. Kolymbetra garden, full of orange trees, extending to five acres in the Valley of the Temples, is the ideal scene to live an extraordinary and unforgettable multi-sensual experience of culture and wonderful scents.

Museums

Museo Diocesano

The Diocesan Museum of Agrigento is located at the Archbishop's Palace. The historical mobile furniture and the entire collection tell the story of the diocese from the period of the 12th - 19th century. In one of the rooms we find the marble and rare elephant of the Norman period, a Christological symbol. Among other objects you can also see some boards of the wooden ceiling of the Cathedral of 1964. The other rooms such as that of the Silver, the Meeting Room and the various photos on display enrich the museum by offering visitors a very rich collection.

Museums

Casa di Pirandello

Pirandello's House dates back to the end of the nineteenth century and has a rich garden, surrounded by olive trees and oaks. In the building, the Pirandello family took refuge to defend themselves from the cholera epidemic that attacked the city in 1867. Since 1949, the house has been declared a national monument. In 1952 this was purchased by the Region, which took care of the restoration and arrangement of the same. Today the house is a museum that presents to the public paintings by Pirandello, his most famous works. Since 1987 the house has been a single institute with the Luigi Pirandello Library.
