Gavi is located in the province of Alessandria, on the border between Piedmont and Liguria , absorbing traditions and dialects. The village extends at the foot of a hill on which stands the majestic fort that almost seems to crush it.

The fate of the town is linked to that of the fort: both have very ancient origins. The present appearance of the fort dates back to the Middle Ages when it was still the castle. After numerous and animated events, the castle was transformed into a fort, and later, in prison.

In the 20th century the fort was practically abandoned and only about 30 years ago the restoration work that lasted so far has begun. Not all areas of the fort are accessible and for this reason the visit to the fort is not free. However, the cost is not high and certainly worth it, even for the panoramic views that you have from the Fortress on the surrounding area.

The urban plan of Gavi, like the fort, dates back to the medieval period. Its historic center still retains many medieval and Renaissance buildings. There are also numerous details that recall the distant past: portals, columns, porches, arches. The doors hide the inner courtyards with characteristic colonnades or colorful gardens.

In Gavi there are obviously shops where you can buy local products, such as amaretti, ravioli and the inevitable white wine “Gavi”.
