The Cinque Terre: the town of Levanto

Liguria, Levanto
Liguria, Levanto
At the entrance of the Cinque Terre, Levanto is a town which, lying in a valley of green, leads to the sea offering a natural sense of beauty , thanks to the contrasting colours of the earth with water. Surrounded by a number of villages formed by groups of houses clinging to each other, Levanto opens its arms to an extended Gulf sea, formed by rocks first and then by sandy beaches interspersed with small establishments throughout the summer.

But Levanto is not only summer, with its old town and its hiking trails that connect to the Cinque Terre, offers value to an unlimited season.
The surrounding area and trails of the Cinque Terre are Regional Park, which is why Levanto has retained its natural beauty still untouched, their customs, their culture predominantly agricultural has not been altered despite the development of the times. Just look at the famous "balcony" to hold the land, most often steep and antonyms, built with "dry walls" that blend with the landscape and are equal to the majestic "Chinese wall". Walking trails on the sea or frequent train connections make you reach the Cinque Terre, making you forget cars, traffic and chaos!

For those who love art, Levanto provides key medieval buildings, the streets in the historic centre features with grotesque that one can admire by strolling, or the great medieval Loggia, the ancient market, other main seaside resort of the country, with a fresco dating back to 1000 and recently discovered and restored. Always at the age of that era, it is a must to visit the Church of St. Andrew, second settlement of the country, aisles and a central rosette worked on the facade of white marble from Carrara and even the majestic castle in a strategic position.

Monterosso al Mare (4 Km)

Santuario Nostra Signora di Soviore

Situated at 4 km from Monterosso, it was founded in the 14th century with contribution of local residents, who considered it as their own pilgrimage destination. Inside the beautiful church, which still attracts many visitors and devotees, a valuable historical organ Agati offers the occasion for fine concerts. The Sanctuary of Soviore is part of a track solely dedicated to sanctuaries, since each of the five village situated in Cinque Terre has a local religious church for pilgrimages.

La Spezia (18 Km)

Castello San Giorgio

The castle of San Giorgio was built in 1252 thanks to Niccolò Fieschi. The construction of its walls today represents a testimony of about 300 meters. The interior looks eccentric thanks to the characteristic Ghibelline battlements and the walkways of the guards. In 1606 the castle was renovated again by the Genoese. The property is located in the city of La Spezia, and has an entrance to the north and one in the west area. Today the castle is part of the Ubaldo Formentini Civic Archaeological Museum.

La Spezia (18 Km)

Cattedrale di Cristo Re

The construction of the cathedral dates back to 1975 in a strategic point of the city with the purpose of the unification of the historic districts with the eastern ones. The outside has the form of a hyperboloid to a flap. The 50m diameter drum cover supports the wall and unloads the weight towards the steel structure of the joints. The interior receives light from the glass window of the eye in the center of the dome, which combined with the original frescoes make the cathedral the most important Catholic religious place in the city.
