Hidden in the hinterland of the southern part of the Lazio coast, we find Itri, along the ancient Via Appia. His name according to some would derive from the 'process' position along this route. Itri is a picturesque medieval town located in the Aur0unci Mountains at 170 meters above sea level. The center is dominated by the powerful Castle of Itri. Recently renovated, it often hosts events, shows and exhibitions. The castle was built between the 10th and 11th century and is perched on a hill, part of the houses is built close to it.

The oldest part of the village, the district of San Gennaro, is located right along the Via Appia. Narrow staircases have always connected these two parts of Itri. A few years ago, the stretch of the Via Appia was arranged that passes through the Valle di Sant'Andrea.

In the village you can visit some churches such as the Church of the Annunziata where there is the silver statue of the Madonna della Civita, the patron saint of Itri who is celebrated on 21 July. The homonymous sanctuary is located on Monte Fusco at 673 meters high and is visited every year by almost half a million devotees. You can climb to the sanctuary following a very suggestive path that leads along the chapels of the Via Crucis.

Once you get to the top you can admire the entire Gulf of Gaeta and if you are lucky you can see up to Ischia and Mount Vesuvius. If you have the opportunity to visit Itri in June don't miss the Infiorata, a floral event on the occasion of Corpus Christi. The path of the procession is completely covered with paintings made with flower petals. The museum of Frà Diavolo is worth visiting. Frà Diavolo was the nickname of Michele Pezza, born in Itri in 1771 and died in 1806 at the hands of the French. He was a colonel in the Bourbon army and as a military/brigand he fought the French of the Napoleonic army.
