Castellaneta, a City with Great Monuments

Castellaneta - The Old Town

Castellaneta belongs to the province of Taranto which is in the Puglia region of Italy.
It is one of the oldest settlements according to the evidence available. The area was inhabited from the Bronze Age which means there have been people living there between 3rd and 2nd millennium BC.
However, it is believed that the modern history of the city is started either 6th or 8th century.

Modern Castellaneta depends on agriculture for its income. Grapes, olives and almonds are the main agricultural crops grown.
Tourism has become a good income earner for the city folks during the recent times.
Since the coastline offers blue waters and fine sand, tourists arrive there every season. There are private beaches and reputed hotels there. There are also two theme parks that make the city alive during the summer.

There are many interesting places to visit when you are in Castellaneta. There are buildings with civil architecture as well as religious architecture in the city for tourists to witness.
These could be seen in the old town. There are walls, narrow allies and buildings to see.
One of the most important buildings is the Cathedral. It has been built in 1220 and was later rebuilt completely. Piazza Umberto I is one of the important monuments that also has a fountain.
Monument built for Rudolf Valentino is also one that a tourist should not miss.

Castellaneta also has been a religious center for centuries. Therefore, a number of church buildings exist in the old quarter of the city.
There are some archeological sites for one to visit as well. Church of the Proposition is one of the churches built in 1000CE.
Legend says that it was built by a captain of a ship
that has got caught in a storm. The captain has promised to build this church in case he was spared. He escaped unharmed and subsequently built this church.
