Altamura a City Well Known for its Bread

Altamura Cathedral

Located in a plateau, Altamura is a city that comes under the province of Bari which is a part of Apulia region of Southern Italy.


This city is famous for its bread.It is so popular that this particular type of bread is also sold in many other parts of Italy.According to the Latin poet Horace, the water in this city is the worst in the world but their bread is better than fine.

Altamura has been inhabited in the Bronze Age according to available evidence.During the time between 6th and 3rd centuries massive walls have been built around the city.
However, the importance of the city came down later and only in 1232 the Altamura Cathedral was built by Emperor Fredrick II.
Present day Altamura is mainly a center for agricultural production.There is a population of 69,728 people living in the city.

In addition to the bread, it is also well known for its wines.
There are many attractions offered for the visitors to the city.
When you start your excursion of Altamura from the Cathedral Square, the first thing you will find is the Monument to the fallen built in 1799.
The next one is the Altamura Cathedral which has been built from 1232 to 1242. This church has carved scenes from the New Testament.
On the arches you will find 22 scenes from the life of Jesus Christ.
One of the most important places you must visit when you are in Altamura is the museum there. The museum spans two floors and is divided into five sections in order to provide artifacts from different periods of time.

When you visit this beautiful town, you must not forget to enjoy their cuisine and relax.They have the best bread in the world and also some excellent wines in addition to the mushrooms, boiled lamb and the herbs.

Palazzo De Angelis-Viti

Palazzo De Angelis-Viti is one of the most representative and best preserved examples of palaces of the type house at court. It is located near the Gate of Bari. The building has changed over the years. The initial part, that of the building building which includes the ground floor and the main floor, dates back to the beginning of construction, with also the entrance portal and the internal loggia. Between the 17th and 18th centuries, the entrance portal was modified and the second floor was completed.
