Scanno is a located in the province of L'Aquila of the Abruzzo region in Central Italy. This town of alleys and narrow streets is found in Sagittario Valley that is encircled by Majella Mountains. It is a picturesque town that has been photographed by some of the best known photographers. According to Edward Lear the British author and poet it is the place where one will find the most beautiful Italian women. Scanno is the home to Abruzzo's largest basin in which you have the town's natural lake. According to local legend it has been created due to a feud between a white witch and a sorcerer. The lake is located in the place where the witch fell. During the Second World War the ex-President of Italy lived in the town as a refugee for a short period. Many visitors make it to this little town while on their way to the ski resorts located in the surrounding mountains. They are fascinated by the architecture of the dwelling houses and other buildings of the town with their balconies, alleys and stairways. Even the costumes of women of the old days appear to be beautiful ones which are still worn by some. Though there are some remains of ancient walls that look like those of a Roman settlement, the records show that its history dates back to 11th century. People or Scanno are well known for their lacework and crotchet work. They make beautiful blankets and table cloths with the use of these skills. Also, they are skilled in creating handmade dolls. They are also well known for their creation of filigree. Relic holders and crosses are among their artifacts. Folks of Scanno are also well known for their preparation of their traditional Pastries. They use chocolate, almonds and cooked premature wine in its preparation.
