Castel del Monte is a beautiful medieval village fortified in the Gran Sasso e Monti della Laga National Park. The village is located south of Campo Imperatore, at an altitude of 1345 m, not far from the cities of L'Aquila, Pescara and Teramo.

In the heart of the Apennines, at the foot of the Gran Sasso d'Italia, the highest mountain in the chain that encloses the the only glacier in southern Europe, the Calderone. The geographical position, the height of the mountains, the different geology of the reliefs, give the territory an extraordinary wealth of animal and plant species and a variety of ecosystems truly unique. Land of farmers and shepherds who have given so much to the economy of the country, Castel del Monte still preserves, in the architecture of the village, the characteristic features of the ancient splendor.

The wise and centuries-old processing of stone is found mainly in the walls, houses, housing and defensive buildings, in sports, tunnels that cover the streets of the village beyond above which the living plans are developed and in the precious architectural decorations. The millennial work of man has enriched this environmental context characterized by ancient agricultural and pastoral landscapes such as open fields, geometric river gardens, almond trees and monumentals chestnut woods.

Stefano di Sessanio, Castelvecchio and other sites of archaeological interest such as Peltuinum. The Night of the Witches The medieval village of Castel del Monte offers a beautiful artistic and landscape scenery that offers truly unique sensations.

The walk under the sports, through the streets of the center, transports the visitor into an atmosphere that knows of ancient beliefs and traditions. Suspended halfway between reality and imagination, the spirit of the village, unchanged over time, is lit every year, on 17 August, when the ancient “rite de re is renewed seven sports”, or the Night of the Witches. Magic is on stage on the streets of the village, with a traveling theatrical show that takes place along the streets of the historic center and that brings the viewer back in time among centuries-old traditions that popular culture has grown and strengthened.
