The structure of the Baptistery of Pisa, covered with white marble, is essentially Romanesque style, though the original plan has not been fully realized, both for the succession of many artists, the influence of new trends in architectural vestiges. So with several interruptions, the baptistery was built in the period from 1153 up to the end of the next century, under the direction dell'architteto Diotisalvi.
Much of the sculptural decoration, human statues, busts of saints and prophets belong to the artists Nicola and Giovanni Pisano. All the statues have been replaced by copies in order to avoid destruction.
This monumental building is dedicated to St. John the Baptist and is part of the magnificent complex of Piazza dei Miracoli. Its dome-shaped pyramid, was built with red bricks and white lead.
A curious note is that in the Baptistery of Pisa in 1564, was named Galileo Galilei.
