The main waterway is the Cannaregio Canal, which e connects the Grand Canal and the lagoon. It is the only channel inside the old town, over the Grand Canal, where the boats can pass.
And it is only crossed by two bridges, of which one is the Ponte dei Tre Archi, the only bridge with three arches remained in Venice.
But also the other is very interesting, the Bridge of the Spires.
From a " covered-porch" at the foot of this bridge you can reach the Jewish Ghetto, where you can still see the iron hinges of the doors that once closed the Ghetto at night.
Cannaregio is the name that can be attributed inter alia to the fact that here, during low tide, flowed a river called Marzenego, where today lies the channel Canareggio. In the eleventh century, the district is mentioned as Canareclo. Under the Hapsburg domination in the nineteenth century, the first land link between Venice and the mainland was built, with the station of Saint Lucia.
Cannaregio has always been a historic popular and red district, even infamous for the presence of many offenders. Luckily later it was upgraded and renovated, new residences were built. The main street of the entire district is the wide road journey from the station of Saint Lucia in Rialto. Here you can see the beautiful church of Santa Maria degli Scalzi, but there is also the first Renaissance church in Venice, the Church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli. And also the Campo dei Mori, with figures of people died near the doors of the palaces.
