It is the cathedral Church of the Diocese of Sulmona-Valva and was built in 1075. Initially, it was dedicated to Santa Maria, then, undergoing a couple of transformations in the twelfth century it was dedicated to the Patron Saint of Sulmona, San Panfilo from which it also took its name.
