Porta del Popolo
The People's Gate owes its current appearance to a sixteenth-century reconstruction of what was the Flaminia Gate. The external facade of the Door was commissioned to Michelangelo who transferred the office to Nanni di Baccio Bigio. For his execution he was inspired by the Arch of Titus. The original circular towers were replaced by two watchtowers with square plan and the building was surmounted by great elegance battlements.
