The construction works of the Monumental Cemetery, begun by Giovanni di Simone, started at the end of '200. It could be defined as a long rectangular porch that surrounds a large lawn area and closed externally by a city characterized by marble arches and Gothic windows. The walls of the four corridors were painted in the sixteenth century by important artists: Piero di Puccio, Benozzo Gozzoli, Spinello Aretino and the so-called "Master of the Triumph of Death".
The cemetery of Pisa was destroyed during the war, the fire broke out due to a grenade. The frescoes were distorted and swollen, many sculptures were also damaged. Currently you can admire the sculptures completely restored, thanks to the Work of the Primate Pisana. The frescoes were detached from the walls with a delicate technique and put back together, so they came out sinopie: the preparatory drawings (the original idea of the teachers) that are very helpful for the study of masterpieces.
