Cuneo, capital of the province “Granda”, a land of strong migration, is placed on a wedge-shaped terrace at the confluence of the Gesso creek in the Stura , from which he draws his name.
In the past, it was an important point of transit between Piedmont and southern France, through the Col della Maddalena and that of Tenda or through the first mountain tunnel in Alpine history, the “Hole di Viso”, a tunnel built between 1475 and 1480 just below the Colle delle Traversette. About 75 meters long at almost 3000 m. on Monviso, it is a work of high engineering that for over five centuries connects the Po Valley with the beyond the Valle del Guil.
The economic agreement for its construction was undertaken between the French Dauphinate and the Marquisate of Saluzzo, understood that allowed and facilitated the trade, especially of salt, between the two alpine slopes (for the first time connected by a tunnel), exchanges that intensified bringing significant benefits to the populations local.
Today the city is particularly important for agriculture and the trade of cattle and Cuneo celebrates its peasant origins. celebrating the chestnut with the Marrone fair in addition to the renowned Piedmontese meats known and appreciated for their delicacy.
