The tastes of Moena: the Puzzone Cheese
Puzzone, a typical cheese from Val di Fassa in Trentino
In Val di Fassa one is for fun, but why give up some sin of gluttony?
The cuisine of the Valley is full of typical dishes and the taste of South Tyrolean cuisine and of the Venetian tradition.
The Fassa Valley is famous for its cheese, the boss of them to make it the best known is undoubtedly the Puzzone di Moena or Spetz Tsaorì a strong flavor cheese and a presidy of Slow Food since years.
A cheese with a pronounced taste and flavor that wa very useful on the table of the poor farmers of long ago: with a small amount it provides a very special flavor to the dish. When cut, this delicacy opens up a very penetrating smell, that leaves little space after the scents of the pastures of the Val di Fassa, the scent of mountain air and of the milk from his cows. It is definitely one of the most healthy and tasty cheese, with a strong personality.
The “M” symbol of the Puzzone stands for the initial of Málaga, the typical Trentino huts where the farmer still expects milk to produce cheese from high Alps.
During the excursions you can visit these small huts and often attend a primary processed cheese. You can enjoy all these flavours and dishes rich in tradition in the shelters of the Valley or in huts, in a hotel but also in the finest restaurants in the area. How can you resist a good risotto in the winter after a good day of ski, or a platter of fresh cheeses and cold cuts after a nice walk in the summer, between green mountains and fresh air? Do not miss the Val di Fassa and its strong flavours!
