Mount Linzone

Excursion as easy as profitable, especially from a panoramic aspect. The coastal of Monte Linzone is in fact the first significant elevation of the Orobic prealps, with its sweet and verdant summit dome overlooking the underlying Bergamo plain, a thousand meters lower. The trip is feasible almost all year round, except in the case of heavy snowfalls, however rare now.

From the town of Roncola San Bernardo, one of the most famous tourist resorts in the province (20 kilometers from Bergamo, altitude 858 meters), you start to follow the steep paved road that leads to the cemetery. Continue straight, until beyond the end of the road, entering a comfortable signposted path. Having come out of the woods, and passed a wavy lawn with a large cabin, the most strenuous stretch of the trip begins: a wide but steep rocky and gravel channel, which requires a minimum of caution. At its end, you reach the spectacular ridge of the mountain, where the view opens onto the Imagna Valley below and the entire Orobie chain in the background.

Now bending to the left, continue along the easy and undulating summit ridge, until you reach the wide grassy dome of the summit, on which is placed a large iron cross: Monte Linzone, altitude 1392 meters, 1.30 hours from the start. The return takes place along the route followed uphill, and takes about an hour.

The panorama is of those who are not easily forgotten, and it is rightly famous: the Val San Martino, which sinks for a thousand meters below us, the entire Po Valley, closed by the nuanced chain of the Apennines; on the opposite side the Imagna Valley lying at our feet, with the Orobie chain in the background, in a succession as far as the eye can see valleys and peaks.
By completing the excursion in the months of May and June, it will also be possible to admire in all its beauty the flowering of daffodils: a bloom so extraordinary to the point that, until the 1960s, on these meadows took place the traditional as indispensable “narcisata”, a sort of race for those who collected the biggest and most beautiful decks. According to chronicles of the time, on May 1, 1960, something like twenty thousand people counted on the meadows of Roncola San Bernardo! If we think that, at the time, the access road was not yet paved — it would have been only three years later, in 1963 — we can understand how popular this real “party of spring.”

Excursion to M. Canto Alto dalla fraz. M. by Nese

Monte Canto Alto

Canto Alto can be rightly defined as the “mountain of Bergamo” par excellence: clearly visible from the city, with its unmistakable silhouette, it can also be reached by having only half a day off. Passable almost all year round, except in the case of heavy snowfalls, the trip is characterized by the vast and suggestive panorama visible from the summit, on which stands a giant iron cross, built in 1979 and visible tens of kilometers away. While easy, the hike requires a minimum of experience and attention in the last steep stretch on the ridge.

From the town of Alzano Lombardo, at the entrance of the Val Seriana, you can reach the hamlet Monte di Nese, at 800 meters above sea level, in a beautiful panoramic position (about 20 kilometers from Bergamo). From the new parish church we continue briefly along the paved road, and then take on the left a mule track, which soon leads to a marked pass, called the Forcella.

Then turn left, starting to cross with a few ups and downs the steep northern slopes of Monte Cavallo, immersed in a thick forest.
You then reach a wide and rounded meadow hill — the Canto Basso — from which you continue in a west direction along the comfortable ridge, which later turns into a ridge, sometimes steep and bumpy. With a little effort and attention, we finally take you to the wide summit of Canto Alto, with its colossal cross: 1146 meters altitude, 1.30 hours from the start. The return takes place along the same path as the climb, and takes about 1.15 hours. In
the dark centuries of the Middle Ages, in the midst of the bloody disputes between Guelphs and Ghibellines, exactly on the top of the mountain, by virtue of its exceptional strategic position, a real and own fortress, repeatedly documented. Probably had to be a fortified structure of considerable size, as demonstrated by some excavations carried out in 1978, which brought to light among other things a cistern for the rainwater collection, an indication of the presence of an unlimited group of soldiers.

It should also be noted that we are in the heart of the Parco dei Colli, an important protected area that in recent decades has had the great merit of preserving almost intact the vast and suggestive a succession of hills that surround the city of Bergamo to the north.

Crespi d'Adda Village, Bergamo

In the province of Bergamo, near Trezzo d'Adda, a bit hidden between the Brembo and Adda rivers lies this extraordinary village. The result of the commitment of the Crespi family, cotton industrialists, more than a century ago. In 1878 Cristoforo B. Crespi decided to build in that green corner, near the water and a bit isolated, a modern factory. Unlike other industrialists, Crespi believed that a comfortable and quiet life was of vital importance for the workers and for the proper functioning of the factory. He had three buildings built together with the plant for the workers who worked in the cotton mill. His son Silvio, returning from his studies in Great Britain, proposed the construction of a real workers' village. Houses complete with external services and garden were built. The families were large and they found enough space in the beautiful, comfortable homes. The gardens were charged for a vegetable garden, so people became almost self-sufficient and had something to do beyond work. The village was slowly completed completely. Nothing was missing. The church full of frescoes and the house of the parish priest not far away, near the doctor's house. Public toilets, a laundry room, a grocery store, a hospital and even a school.
The Crespi especially cared for the education of young people. The school days were long and in addition to normal subjects, the children were also taught the techniques of working in the factory. The management also lived in the village but in beautiful villas, one different from the other. The Crespi family built the Castle, a large medieval villa next to the factory. Nothing was missing, a short distance from the village, there was the cemetery with the mausoleum for the master family. This beautiful place remained as it was then, with so many houses still inhabited by descendants of the old workers. Ordered and clean remains a unique country, to be visited without a doubt.

Excursion to Fratelli Calvi da Carona hut

The climb to the Fratelli Calv i Hut, one of the best known in the province, can rightly constitute the first approach to high mountains, both for newbies and children. The trip can be said to be entirely elementary, classified as level T, moreover gratified by a natural environment of first magnitude. The basin of the refuge, dotted with large and small lakes, natural and artificial, is surrounded by an uninterrupted circle of peaks, at a glance of great effect and suggestion. Particularly spectacular is the Tenda Devil's Lace, defined for its regular and unmistakable pyramid shape the “Orobie Matterhorn”.

The trip takes place largely on a comfortable dirt road serving the hydroelectric plants in the area, and is therefore also very suitable for mountain biking. In addition, in certain seasonal periods and time slots, the road is open to private vehicle traffic, even if it requires the utmost attention and prudence: it is therefore essential to ask for information detailed on site on the actual viability.

From the town of Carona, in the upper Brembana Valley (1116 meters altitude, 52 kilometers from Bergamo) you start to follow the steep dirt road that you can forward into the valley, cloaked with suggestive forests. After passing the ancient and rustic village of Pagliari, you will arrive at the spectacular waterfall of Val Sambuzza, which precipitates loud and bubbly at the side of the road.
Continue along the road again, reaching a crossroads at a pond, now beyond the forest: Lake Prato, at an altitude of 1650 meters.

Neglecting the road on the left, which leads to the Longo Hut, you must continue straight, sometimes steeply, up to the base of the powerful lake dam Fregabolgia, of the massive gravity type, 63 meters high and completed in 1953. Once you reach the top of the barrier, continue along the road that runs alongside the large artificial reservoir, containing at the highest level as many as 4,660,000 cubic meters of water. A few more minutes walk finally allow you to reach the clearly visible building of the Fratelli Calvi Hut: altitude 2015 meters, 3 hours from Carona.
The return takes place along the same path as the climb and takes about 2 hours.
The hut, opened in 1935 and completely renovated in the early 1980s, has 85 beds.

Excursion to Fratelli Longo da Carona

Despite the extreme ease of access, the Fratelli Longo Hut is much less frequented than the other refuges in the area, probably due to the fact of being, even at equal altitude, in a far more alpine, lonely, unsuitable for children, almost perched on the steep slopes that close the austere and slightly gloomy Valle del Monte Sasso.

The trip takes place entirely on a comfortable dirt road, wide and regular in the first section, narrower and more uneven in the second part. In addition, in certain seasonal periods and time slots, the first stretch of the road (up to the junction of Lake Prato) is open to private vehicle traffic, even if it requires the utmost attention and prudence: it is therefore essential to ask for detailed information on the spot on the actual viability.
From the town of Carona, in the upper Brembana Valley (altitude 1116 meters, 52 kilometers from Bergamo) you start to follow the steep dirt road that leads into the valley, cloaked with suggestive forests. The journey continues taking the steep road on the left, which with some hairpin bends quickly gains altitude. Then the route becomes more smooth and linear, until you reach the head of the valley, where the small building of the Fratelli Longo Hut is clearly visible: altitude of 2026 meters, 3 hours from Carona.
The return takes place along the same path as the climb and takes about 2 hours.
From the hut, inaugurated in 1923, we recommend that you continue briefly along the mule track (about 15 minutes) until you reach the above Lake Devil (altitude 2141 meters), at the base of the powerful rock face of Monte Aga, in a severe and suggestive high mountain environment. Although smaller in size, the lake already existed before the dam was erected, completed in 1932 and 26 meters high, which created a basin containing 2,560,000 cubic meters of water.
A little upstream of the junction of Lake Prato you can also notice the obvious entrance of an abandoned mine, reminding us how these mountains were exploited for mining purposes since times. more remote.

Excursion to the Laghi Gemelli hut

Lakes Gemini

The basin of the Lakes Gemelli Refuge is one of the most romantic and relaxing places in the Bergamo mountains, primarily due to the presence of numerous artificial lakes, large and small, now part an integral part of the environment and the landscape.

During the excursion we are about to describe, including also the Carona lake at the start, you can observe as many as four, and a fifth — Lake Colombo — is located just over twenty minutes walk from the hut. It is no coincidence, therefore, the area is among the busiest in the province, despite the relative length of the climb, which in any case requires a certain degree of training.

From the town of Carona, in the upper Brembana Valley (52 kilometers from Bergamo) it is possible to park on the southern shore of the artificial pond, reachable along the top of the dam: altitude 1096 meters.
We then start to walk a comfortable and unmistakable mule track that, with countless bends, goes up the side of the valley, immersed in a thick and refreshing forest.
After about two hours of walking, now almost near the forest limit, you reach the small dam of Lake Marcio, at 1841 meters above sea level: the barrier, completed in 1925, is 18 meters, and the basin contains 850,000 cubic meters of water.
The mule track continues slowly along the western shore of the lake, until it reaches its southern end, where among other things comes the ENEL service cable car, which also starts from Carona. And a few meters lower here is another lake unexpected, decidedly larger: Lago delle Casere, an altitude of 1784 meters, containing 2,470,000 cubic meters of water, held by a dam completed in 1946 and 47 high meters.
The return takes place along the same path as the climb and takes about 2 hours.
The refuge, which has 70 beds, is located a few meters from the dam of the Gemelli Lakes: a curious name to remind us that before the erection of the barrier, completed in 1932 and 39 meters high, in This grassland were two small ponds rounded and side by side, precisely “twins”. Today, on the other hand, the invaded contains as many as 6,990,000 cubic meters of water.
