Going from Milan to Switzerland for the Passo della Spluga, one must pass to Campodolcino, a small town in Italian territory that seems same as many other villages in the mountains of Lombardy.

But if you stop and inform yourself, you realize that there is a lot to discover among the gray houses and the high mountains:
The M.U.V.I.S., Lake Azzurro, history of 'grapàtt', Ca' Bardassa and the botanical garden.

But let's go in order:
The Muvis is the local museum, in the hamlet of Corti in a beautiful restored building of the '500. The Palace 'Palàzz' in dialect, which houses the museum was originally probably a tavern. The museum shows the history of the valley, the ancient crafts including that of the 'grapàtt' and the historical environments in a very clear and pleasant path.

Campodolcino was an important center as early as the '600 and became an autonomous municipality in 1816, the local economy was based & amp; ograve; on the transport of goods but after the opening of the Piedmontese tunnels, the population had to find other means of support and it was then that in the territory they dedicated themselves to the production of spirits. The grapàtts became skillful and famous and their grappa were renowned in Northern Italy.

The Ca' Bardassa in Fraciscio is also a restored building and is managed by Muvis, it is a typical rural building in which all the original environments have been preserved. Also in the same hamlet you can also visit the Botanical Garden, near the church of S. Rocco. There you will find all the plants in the valley, from buckwheat, mallow and carnations.

In the hamlet Motta you can go and admire the beautiful Lake Azzurro. It's a lovely pond very special because it's almost seasonal. It is fed by the underground groundwater that fills with rain water and melting snow.

Madesimo is a small compact high altitude village that lies close to the Swiss border in the Lombardy region of Italy, near to St. Moritz and north of Lake Como, makes an ideal winter holiday destination for anyone thats seeking a relaxing Winter break.

During the week you can enjoy uncrowded slopes and a lack of lift queues, though the atmosphere gets more lively as the wealthy Milanese arrive for a weekend break.

Madesimo offers over 50Kms of Skiing on quality maintained pistes and has one of the most up to date lift systems in Europe to get you around he resort. The Ski area provides a mixture of runs for the intermediate skier, and there is an excellent beginners slope where you can experience those first turns,under the expert guidance of the highly rated Ski School.For the more accomplished skier there are a mix of black runs and the famous "Canalone" awaits reputed to be one of the toughest runs in Europe.

Madesimo is a high altitude village so has good snow from late Nov till late Spring, has excellent snow making facilities covering all the main pistes. The village is compact so you're on the mountain in very quick time from all the Hotels.The village has a range of good Hotels,coffee shops, pizzerias, bars and a mix of high class shops.

If you like mysterious and disturbing places, try to stop at Lake Lecco, more precisely in Bellano. Preferably go there after a period of heavy rains. After parking the car, go up to the gate and buy the entrance ticket. Continue the walk and after a short climb meet the 'Ca del Diavol', the devil's house, a building dating back to at least the nineteenth century. The purpose of its construction was never clarified, some argue that it was used to control the movement of boats on the lake, others believe it was useful to anything else! It is said that in this four-story turret, festivals were organized with satanic rituals. On the facade of the top floor you see represented mythological figures who have fed the mysterious stories about it. Continue to climb and you are on a walkway in the middle of a deep and evocative gorge: the Orrido di Bellano.

Horrido means in this case a natural gorge formed 15 million years ago from the waters of the Pioverna stream. The walkways stuck in the rock go into the rift. Do you already feel a strange feeling? The overhang, the waterfalls, the sparkling waters, the caves and the galleries carved into the rocks present a very suggestive spectacle. In the deafening noise of the stream rushing down to the lake, don't you feel like you hear a voice? Maybe it's Taino who calls you from the afterlife. According to legend, when the valiant warrior died, his comrades diverted the course of the stream and dropped his body with all the riches conquered, into a cavity in the center of the river.

They covered it with a huge boulder and brought the waters back to their bed to hide it forever. The walk on the catwalks sends you to another era, full of mystery and unknown places. The Orrido di Bellano, an intriguing walk on Lake Lecco.
