The library was established in 1768, initially composed of the book collection of Cardinal Alessandro Giuseppe Furietti. The collection is arranged within the sixteenth-century Palazzo Nuovo, and contains more than 730,000 pieces of documents, volumes, photos, prints and numerous written testimonies of the cultural life of the city. Over the years, the structure was expanded with new materials, thanks to the continuous donations and purchases of the library itself. Today, the library is the primary institution for the collection and preservation of Bergamo's book heritage.

The castle of Urgnano was built by Archbishop Giovanni, in 1354, after his brother Luchino Visconti died. To make it difficult to attack enemies, he is surrounded by the moat. It has two entrances, one to the north and the other on the other side, and is built entirely of terracotta.
