Milan - Churches and places of worship

Rotonda della Besana

It is a structure in late Baroque style, the work of the architects Arrigoni, Croce and Raffagno. Its construction dates back to the 17th century, initially it was a cemetery for the dead of the Ca' Granda. The original core of the complex is the church which has a plan in the shape of a cross. An octagonal dome crowned by the slender lantern rises at the intersection of the arms. Since 1958 the complex has been owned by the Municipality and is often used as an exhibition space for exhibitions, screenings and cultural events.

Certosa di Garegnano

This monument is a monastery and is located on the outskirts of Milan. It was founded in 1349, by the bishop and lord of the city and had the honor of hosting, for a short time, the famous writer Francesco Petrarca. The facade is decorated with modules mixed between the Renaissance and Baroque style, consisting of many statues, obelisks, friezes and flames. In addition, inside, the ceiling is decorated with an octagonal tiburio, while the church has a single nave with barrel vault and geometric stuccoes.

Cappella Funebre Borromeo

The chapel was built in the mid-nineteenth century by Balzaretto, Giuseppe, and the brothers Lorenzo and Vincenzo Vela. It was Giovanni D'Adda who ordered its construction, after the death of his wife. The architecture of the building has a ritual and religious character, following the model of a baptistery. The interior of the chapel is well rich in sculptural works and a very careful decoration by the Vela brothers. It is currently open to the public, and you can visit it freely.

Seminario Vescovile

The Episcopal Seminary is located on the old Lombard convent of Theodote, and dates back to 700. Thanks to its proximity to a small city gate, it is also called 'della Pusterla'. Legend says that Cuniperto, Lombard king, insulted a girl called Theodote, and in order not to let her speak, forced her to enter the convent. Some scholars, however, say that he built the building on purpose to lock up the maiden. On 12 July 1865 Monsignor Vincenzo Gandini took possession of it, and he restored it, and two years later the priests occupied it. From that day it has become the home of the formation of man and theological-spiritual of aspirants for priestly life.

Santuario di S.Maria di Canepanova

The Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Canepanova was built between 1500 and 1507 by Giovanni Antonio Amedeo and represents one of the most significant monuments of the city of Pavia. The square construction reflects the ad quadratum style of the architect born in Pavia. The interior space is centrally planned with the eight sides of the dome projected into the square perimeter of the church. There are also works and canvases by artists such as the Procaccini depicting the “Women of the Bible” in the wing above the portal.

Chiostro di Santa Maria alle Cacce

The Cloister of Santa Maria alle Caccia owes its name to the fact that it was outside the walls of Pavia and was the place where the Lombards went for the hunt. It was built in 747 by the then King Rachis. During the centuries it suffered several damages and was rebuilt in 1936. However, the Lombard architectural structures remain visible, such as the windows outward and the column that separated the central nave from the left one. There are also frescoes as different as that of the vault, depicting the “Virgin carried by angels” by Andrea Lanzani.

Pieve e Battistero di Velezzo XI sec.

The Parish Church and the Baptistery of Velezzo are buildings that date back to the eleventh century. La Pieve, is a group of farmhouses arranged around the church and the baptistery. The building is dedicated to the Nativity of Mary and is currently managed by the Church of Lomello. Instead, the Baptistery has been recently renovated and today we find it in excellent condition. It stands out compared to other buildings of this type because it is circular plan.

Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore

The Church of Santa Maria Maggiore di Sondalo was annexed to the Benedictine monastery of S. Abbondio di Como and was the head of the Pleban Church of Mazzo. In 1445 it became an autonomous parish and in 1469, on the occasion of a profound restoration, it was once again consecrated. In the following centuries the church was enlarged and restructured several times. In the seventeenth century the old church, equipped with three altars, was partially knocked down and replaced with a new one. In the building there are a precious cross from the 16th century and many pictorial works, also coming from other churches in Sondalo.

Santuario dell'Incoronata

the Temple of the Incoronata is the absolute most important monument of Lodi representative of the Lombard Renaissance, remember the greatest representatives of that period Bramante (1479) and Leonardo da Vinci (1482), This was almost mainly about Milan and the submissive territories of which it was part. The civic adjective is added to the temple as the church has always been owned by the municipality and not of the diocese. The interior has become over time a real art gallery, numerous frescoes have been made there and several canvases of great artistic value are kept.
